Halloween Rice Krispie Treat Ideas
When coming up with this Halloween rice krispie treats recipe I knew that I wanted to be able to get multiple Halloween themed designs out of one batch of homemade rice krispie treats. I also wanted to make sure that the monsters, witches, and creatures could be made with similar ingredients so they could be relatively inexpensive as well as quick and easy to make.
Out of 1 batch of homemade rice krispies you will have 28 individual rice krispie treats. There are 7 unique Halloween themed designs and each design produces 4 treats.
The designs I fell in love with were Frankenstein's monster, ghosts, spider webs, mummies, witches, bats, and the classic Halloween phrase BOO!
Below are the full instructions on how to make each rice krispie treat design. I grouped the treats with similar ingredients together to streamline the process. For example: the ghosts, mummies, and BOO rice krispie treats are all coated in white chocolate so working on all of them at the same time will save time and cleanup. If you follow in order how I have outlined below, the process will be much easier and quicker from start to finish.
Tips and Tricks
Decorating-
- Prep and set everything out. If you can be organized and have everything ready, decorating will be a breeze. This tip is a sanity saver if you have little helpers wanting in on the action.
- Once the chocolate is melted, you'll need to work quickly. The chocolate will start to harden as it cools so working quickly to coat the rice krispie treats will insure a more even and smooth finish. If the chocolate does harden at any point, just stick it back in the microwave for 10-15 second to melt it again.
- Read the instructions all the way through before starting. This is a good rule of thumb for any recipe. Taking the time to read through the entire Halloween rice krispie treat recipe and each design will improve your end result and make the process much easier, I promise.
- Work with firm rice krispie treats. It is important to allow the rice krispies to firm up before cutting into 2'x3' rectangles. Once cut and starting to coat if at anytime they become too soft and start separating from the weight of the chocolate, support the back of the treat with a butter knife or small spatula while coating with chocolate.
Homemade Rice Krispies-
- Brown the butter. Trust me. This step takes the flavor of the rice krispies to another level. Be patient and keep the temp on medium low heat, keep an eye on it and stir often. Be careful not to burn it. The butter is ready once it's reached a nice golden color.
- Use a large bowl. Use one of the largest bowls you have. This Halloween rice krispie treats recipe makes a lot and you will need a large bowl to mix everything in.
- Let the rice krispies firm up. If you have time plan ahead and make the rice krispie treats the night before and set the tray out on the counter covered with plastic wrap. Or, if making the same day, set the tray of rice krispie treats in the freezer for at least an hour.
Mummy, BOO, and Ghost Rice Krispie Treats
Ghost
BOO!
Mummy
Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups white chocolate melting wafers
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- Eye candies
- Mini marshmallows
Directions:
- In a microwave safe bowl combine 3 ½ cups white chocolate melting wafers with 1 tbsp coconut oil. Melt in the microwave in short bursts, only 20-30 seconds. Pull out and stir then microwave another 20-30 seconds and stir. The chocolate should be melted but if not, microwave again for only 10 seconds at a time. Be careful to not overheat the chocolate or it will burn.
- Grab 12 of the pre-cut rice krispie treats. Holding the dowel/popsicle stick over the melted chocolate bowl, spoon the chocolate onto the front and sides of the treats. Coat just enough to cover any visible rice krispie on the front and sides. On 4 of the ghost rice krispie treats, leave some of the bottom showing.
- Once covered, place back side down onto a piece of parchment paper.
- Start assembling the 4 ghost rice krispie treats.
- While the chocolate is still liquid, place eye candies towards the upper middle of treat
- Start assembling the 4 boo rice krispie treats.
- Scatter sprinkles around the outer edges. Set aside to finish the piping of "BOO" once the chocolate has set. Instructions for this are below.
- Start assembling the 4 mummy rice krispie treats.
- While the chocolate is still wet, place eye candies towards the upper middle of treat.
- Grab ½ bag of reserved mini marshmallows. Take 8 marshmallows out and set aside for Frankenstein's monster. Put the rest in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds until soft and puffed up. Stir immediately.
- Allow marshmallows to cool slightly then grab a bit of the melted marshmallow and stretch with both hands.
- Stretch the marshmallow over the rice krispie treats. It is helpful if you can have someone help here by holding the treat.
Bat and Spider Web Rice Krispie Treats
Spiders web
Bat
Ingredients:
- 2 ½ cups milk chocolate melting wafers
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- Eye candies
- Mini marshmallows
- Oreos
Directions:
- First, set aside 8 milk chocolate melting wafers for the bat and spider heads.
- Grab 4 Oreos and cut in half with a sharp knife. These will be the bat wings.
- In a microwave safe bowl, combine 2 ½ cups milk chocolate melting wafers with 1 tablespoon coconut oil. Melt in the microwave in short bursts, for only 20-30 seconds. Pull it out and stir then microwave another 20-30 seconds and stir. The chocolate should be melted, but if not, microwave again but now only 10 seconds at a time. Be careful to not overheat the chocolate or it will burn.
- (Optional) Depending on the look you want, you can use black food coloring to dye half of the milk chocolate black. I did this in my design for the bat background and the spider body.
- Grab 8 of the pre-cut rice krispie treats. Holding the dowel/popsicle stick over the melted chocolate bowl, spoon the chocolate onto the front and sides of the treats. Coat just enough to cover any visible rice krispie on the front and sides. On 4 of the rice krispie treats for the bat, splatter a small amount of white chocolate over the front for a starry night effect.
- Once complete, place back side down onto a piece of parchment paper.
- Start assembling the 4 bat rice krispie treats.
- While the chocolate is still wet, place the two halves of the Oreos curved edges up and at a slight angle, making a slight v shape and place onto the middle of treat.
- Spread a small amount of the remaining chocolate on the flat side of one of the chocolate wafers you had set aside. Place the wafer where the Oreo halves meet. Put a small amount of chocolate on the top and place the candy eyes.
- Start assembling the 4 spider web rice krispie treats.
- Allow the chocolate to set a little bit for these. It makes less of a mess when wrapping the marshmallow web.
- Grab the bowl of melted mini marshmallows. Reheat in the microwave for 15 seconds until soft and puffed up. Stir immediately.
- Allow the marshmallows to cool slightly then grab a bit of the melted marshmallow and stretch it with both hands.
- Stretch the marshmallow over the rice krispie treat to make the look of webs. It is helpful if you can have someone hold the treat in place.
- Place onto parchment paper back side down.
- Place a chocolate melting wafer onto the front and using leftover milk chocolate, pipe on squiggle legs. It helps if the chocolate is a tiny bit more set
- Pipe a small amount of chocolate on top of chocolate wafer and place candy eyes.

- Use a few sprinkles to create a mouth and stitches towards the bottom.
BOO Rice Krispie Treats
Now that the rice krispie treats have been covered in white chocolate, sprinkles, and had time to set, finish them by piping "BOO" onto the treat. Using a sandwich baggie or piping bag, spoon in the remaining melted green chocolate. Snip a very small hole in the corner of the baggie or piping bag and slowly pipe the word "BOO" in a slight angle. If the chocolate has hardened at any time, just heat it up for about 10 seconds in the microwave. Tip: It helps if the chocolate is a tiny bit more set and thick than hot and thin when piping the letters.
How to Store the Rice Krispie Treats
Rice krispie treats store best at room temperature. These can be made ahead of time, covered with plastic wrap, and left out at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. The chocolate coating acts as an extra barrier and will help keep the rice krispie treats soft for a longer period of time.
FAQ
- Where can I get the ingredients?
- I got all the ingredients on this list from my local Walmart. You can also find any of the decorating candy items at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and of course good ole Amazon.
- Can I make more of certain Halloween designs?
- Definitely! You should have leftover Hershey kisses, Oreos, candy eyes, and sprinkles. Simply increase the amount of chocolate melting wafers for the design you want. There might be a small amount of rice krispie mixture left over but not a lot so if you want to make more than one or two you will need to make more rice krispie treats.
- Do I need to make the rice krispies from scratch?
- Nope! If you would prefer to purchase rice krispie treats and simply decorate them that is definitely an option.
- Can these be made in advance?
- Yes. I have made them 2 weeks in advance for parties. Rice krispie treats last great when stored at room temperature. Simply leave on a try and cover with plastic wrap until ready to serve.
- Do I need to use a stick or dowel?
- The stick or dowel makes decorating quite a bit easier but if you don't want to use one or can't find something to use, leave it out. Set the rice krispie on a knife or small spatula when coating with chocolate.

Ingredients
Homemade Rice Krispies
- ½ cup butter
- 2 (16 oz) mini marshmallows - (½ of 1 bag reserved for decorating)
- 13 oz marshmallow fluff
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ kosher salt
- 13 cups rice cereal
Halloween Designs & Decorations
- 3 ½ cups white chocolate melting wafers
- 2 ½ cups milk chocolate melting wafers
- 2 ½ cups green chocolate melting wafers
- Coconut oil
- Oreos
- Hershey kisses
- Sprinkles
- Candy eyes
- Black food coloring (optional)
- Popsicle sticks or cake pop dowels
- Parchment paper
- ½ bag mini marshmallows (reserved from rice krispie mixture above)
Instructions
- Homemade rice krispie treats
- In a large pot, melt ½ cup butter over medium-low heat. Be patient and let the butter brown to get that extra layer of flavor. It will melt and spit, then foam and become silent, and finally start to turn brown. You should be able to smell a nuttiness and see the color change. Watch closely and stir often.
- When the butter is browned, remove from heat and add 1 bag of mini marshmallows. Melt the marshmallows into the butter, stirring continuously to ensure nothing burns.
- Return to medium low heat and add marshmallow fluff, pure vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until melted and incorporated.
- In a very large mixing bowl, add 7 cups of rice cereal and pour the melted marshmallow mixture over top. Then add the remaining 6 cups of rice cereal and ½ of the second bag of mini marshmallows (reserve the other half for decorating).
- Fold to combine. This may take several minutes to completely incorporate.
- Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray and line with parchment paper to prevent from sticking.
- Transfer the rice krispie mixture to the baking sheet. Lightly dampen your hands and press evenly to all corners of the baking sheet. Take a rolling pin or wet water glass and flatten the top to made sure it is as even as possible. This will make for an easier decorating surface.
- Cover with plastic wrap and set on the counter overnight, in the fridge for 1-2 hours, or in the freezer for an hour. It needs to set in order to cut and decorate them.
- Once set, lift out of the pan onto a cutting board. Following length wise measure and cut every 2 inches all the way down. Then turning, cut width wise every 3 inches. This will give you 28- 2'x3' individual rectangles.
- In the bottom center of each rice krispie treat, insert a popsicle stick or cake pop dowel.
- Gather your melting chocolates, coconut oil, Oreos, Hershey kisses, remaining mini marshmallows, sprinkles, candy eyes, black food coloring, 3 microwave safe bowls, and parchment paper.
